GENTLEMEN, BE SEATED! (1963) by Jerome Moross and Edward Eager I SPY/PINKERTON MAN Femme fatales have played their parts in the annuls of war. The Mata Hari of the Civil War was Belle Boyd, a Virginian supporter of the Confederate cause. In GENTLEMEN, BE SEATED!, Jerome Moross and Edward Eager depict her nefarious exploits in an elaborately humorous scene called the Ballad of Belle Boyd. I Spy/Pinkerton Man is a very brief excerpt from that scene. In the original New York City Opera production in 1963, the role of Belle was played by the notable actor and comedian, Alice Ghostley.
