GERAKAN PROPOSED MCA MERGER RECEIVES RELUCTANT RESPONSE Sailors aboard the sinking ship that is Parti Gerakan, look like their trying to cling on to other political parties to save themselves from drowning. Recent comments by their President Datuk Mah Siew Keongs are suggesting a merger between his party, MCA and SUPP as a move to strengthen Barisan Nasional (BN) in an effort to restore the peoples confidence in the coalition he said. Insiders at MCA suggest that the comments are very dull indeed. Gerakan part members still believe they retain some influence in todays political landscape but the fact is the party is not as attractive as it once was in the past as its voter appeal has almost completely vanished. Since their halcyon days where they achieved formidable success in the 1996 GE against BN winning a high amount of seats in opposition to BN, including the Penang. But their popularity and support began to decline when they joined with BN as coalition partners in 1973 though it retained Penang. By the 2008 GE the voters had well and truly moved on from Gerakan as it spectacularly lost 8 of the 10 parliament seats it held, including losing power in Penang after governing the state for 39 years. Many Gerakan party members are still influenced by their past glories. They achieved formidable success in the 1969 GE as they were then in the opposition. Gerakan joined BN in 1973 and thereafter its popularity started declining though it kept power in Penang. The party suffered its worst electoral defeat in the 12th GE (2008), which saw the party retaining only two parliament seats, compared to the 10 seats it had before the election. Gerakan lost power in Penang after governing the state for almost 39 years. After the 2013 GE, Gerakan was left with only one parliamentary seat, Simpang Renggam. Regardless of MCAs poor performance in GE 2013, the party will ultimately remain in partnership with UMNO and MIC as they believe until Malaysians outgrow their reliance on race based parties, they see themselves as the best party to carry on the struggle in defending the legitimate rights of Chinese Malaysians. AS for Gerakan, they obviously have nothing to bring to the table that would interest MCA or many others and will continue to remain distant voice in the political wilderness.
