GET ON THE COURT AND STAY ON THE COURT. Like most injuries, 2/3 of tennis injuries are due to overuse and 1/3 of tennis injuries are a result of an actual traumatic injury or acute event. Overuse injuries most often affect the shoulders, wrists, and elbows. Shoulder overuse injuries are usually a result of poor conditioning and/ or lack of strength of the rotator cuff muscles. When it is fatigued or weak, there is an increase in the output of work, in the ball in the socket, that irritates the tissues, at this point, the tendon or the bursa can become inflamed and hurt. Net result: Pain with any activity where an overhead motion is involved (such as serving). If the pain persists, it can interfere with sleep and other daily activities. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Flexing and extending the wrist against light resistance with an exercise band three to four times a week may help lessen pain and decrease injuries. * Before preforming any type of at home treatment, particularly when experiencing pain or discomfort, you should first see an Orthopaedic surgeon, that specializes in the treatment of shoulder injuries.
