GETTING HELP FOR YOUR GAME:TIPS All of us from time to time can use some HELP and coaching for our beloved game. However, one must be on the lookout for various scenarios regarding accepting this help. Often, you can get very sideways listening to a lot of different people regarding advice. I have seen this happen many times and it has happened to me too! Because your friend or acquaintance is a BETTER player than you does NOT mean he will give you good advice or knows how to teach. Often, great players CANNOT TEACH and mediocre players are FABULOUS teachers! The trick is sorting all of this out. The first thing is to decide what you think you need help with, then go from there. If it is a general I want to become a better player AND you can afford some professional coaching, then great. If you cant afford it, then there are TONS of videos online, books, and affordable DVDs by many well known player/coaches. Now, if you are going to go the coach route, BEFORE you select, TALK with those who have worked with the person and hear what they have to say before plunking down $$. Also, personalities can come into play during instruction. I have worked with people that knew EVERYTHING about pool but their methods of trying to transfer that info to me was really CONFUSING, not clear cut, jumping around from one aspect to another, then getting upset if i didnt perform. This is NOT what you want! Some coaches are like army DRILL instructors and if you are OK with that, then fine. Personally, I prefer VALIDATION - the best coaching I ever had was when I was given something to do and FAILED to do it, the coach never once pointed out anything bad or wrong! All they did was say now lets do that again, and THIS TIME . . . - in other words they didnt make me wrong for missing or pick apart all the bad things I did etc They simply pointed out how to do it RIGHT the next time. So bottom line, DECIDE what you need help with, then do some homework to select the best method, pay attention to coaching personalities and what you are compatible with, and DONT just take everyones advice without inspection! HAPPY 4th of JULY!
