GIBSON EB-1 BASS GUITAR. 1956. I often look at this bass guitar next to a 1955 Fender in my collection and I am struck at the dramatic difference. Normally I favor style over function and that always seems to leave Fender lacking in comparison to Gibson but not this time. Whereas the Gibson strikes me as being stilted and staid the Fender is open and dynamic. But still a magnificent artifact of the 1950’s when electric guitars builders, especially Gibson, were trying to develop models that would compete with the Fender popularity. And it was in the bass market that Gibson seems to have seemingly kept searching for the “magic” style. And what was that magic style?
