GIIFF attracts more than 100 entries The newly-created Golden Island International Film Festival (GIIFF), which is running for the first time on 7-13 November 2014, largely in northern Cyprus, has attracted more than 100 submissions from 27 countries. These include entries from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Selections will be made in the second half of September. The new festival, which was announced in Nicosia only three months ago, had originally set a deadline of 31 July but had to extend it by two weeks because of the number of submissions. Some come from the two parts of the divided island of Cyprus itself, but others come from as far away as Kyrgyzstan, Japan and the Central African Republic. The organisers, which include IFT chairman Neil McCartney, are now looking for volunteers to help on administration in the UK and in Cyprus during the festival itself. There may be a small amount of money available for this. Anyone interested should email [email protected] The GIIFF team, led by founder Yesim Guzelpinar, director of the UK-based charity Balik Arts, made its first UK presentation on 10th July at the Turkish Cypriot Community Association in London, at an event attended by its two patrons, the actor Tamer Hassan (who is of Turkish Cypriot descent), and Meral Hussein-Ece, Baroness Hussein-Ece (the first woman of Turkish Cypriot origin to be a member of either of the UK Houses of Parliament). The festival is organised jointly by Balik Arts and by Golden Island Culture and Arts Foundation, with support and sponsorship from Creditwest Bank. Other partners and supporters include The Independent Film Trust. the Raindance Film Festival 2014, the British Council, ISFF Detmold, Movies That Matter, the University of East Anglia and the International Short Film Festival Datca (Turkey). The festival will take place across the island at locations including Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, and the Nicosia Buffer Zone, which screenings being held at a variety of venues including Lemar Cinemas, Girne American University, Eastern Mediterranean University, the Home for Co-operation, and the Goethe-Institut Zypern. goldenislandfilmfestival.org
