GLOBAL GRACE – More Gems From Romans 6. Not by Following the Law but by Faith Romans 10:1-4 “Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.” Try to find a declaration like this in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John – there is none. The Jewish nation was under the law during the time of the four gospels. Jesus had already started teaching the doctrine of the new covenant, but He never said that the law was not valid anymore or that faith without works was the only way to salvation. This statement is one of the new things Jesus wanted to teach His disciples when He was on earth, but they were not yet ready for this. (John 16:12-13) Then the Holy Spirit came and Paul was saved by God to inspire us with wonderful and inexpressible truths. In Ephesians 3:8 Paul says that he became a servant of the boundless riches of God. This announcement of the free grace without works is “unfathomable” – it is not found before the teachings of Paul. The Jews’ undoing was that they wanted to establish their own righteousness through the law. Thus Christ established a new dispensation from heaven. He sent Paul to the gentiles with the gospel that He (Christ Himself) was the end of the law. The law was never meant to be a guideline to us today of how we should live. Our guideline is the cross where Christ paid for our sin. By keeping our eyes on the cross we will be able to discern between what is wrong and what is right. Jesus Christ has written it in our hearts. And if the law is then no more, there is then no more judgement or punishment of sin. Jesus bore the punishment for us. Some people like to bring God’s judgement over themselves by saying things like, “God does not answer my prayers because I am too sinful.” If you believe this then you do not believe that Jesus was the end of the law and that He took your sin upon Himself. Then you are still in your sinful state. We should live our lives in such a way that Jesus did not die on the cross in vain.
