GLOBAL SOCIAL MEDIA ( GSM ) NEWS Dateline Metro Manila AMERICAN AUTHOR L.W.HEWITT LISTS THE KOREAN WAR BY NORBERT L. MERCADO AMONG HIS BEST 15 WAR NOVELS by R. L. Guerrero American author L. W. Hewitt listed THE KOREAN WAR by Philippines historical novelist Norbert Lacierna Mercado among the war novels he highly recommends to the readers of historical war novels worldwide . L.W. Hewitt wrote : I love historical fiction. I spent years trying to write serious history...I love the research but became bored with the product . So I wrote my first historical novel. I still do the research, and create what I call the scenery for the story, making sure it is accurate and authentic . I then select little known events within that context and insert my characters inside those events . It makes for an entirely plausible story, albeit fiction . What is remarkable about this process is that most of what happens in real life - especially during the time of war - is so bizarre you cant make it up ! It makes for great fiction ! .... I have selected a number of historical fiction novels set during that most horrible invention of man - war. These are written by a number of authors...I hope you visit their listing in SMASHWORDS . Good reading ! The prolific American author recommends three ( 3 ) historical novels about THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR : 1. JORDANS WAR - 1861 by B.K. Birch ; 2 . JORDANS WAR - 1862 by B.K. Birch ; 3. JORDANS WAR - 1863 by B.K. Birch . He recommends three ( 3 ) novels about WORLD WAR 1 : 1. JOHN BAGGOTS STORY by Leif Gregersen ; 2. MADE IN MYRTKE STREET by B.A. Lightfoot ; 3 . FOR KING AND COUNTRY by Martin Lake . On WORLD WAR 2 , he recommends six ( 6 ) novels : 1. NIGHT AND FOG by Philip Huber ; 2. DEAR JANE by Ben Katcher ; 3. THE RING OF TREACHERY by W.A. Davies ; 4. SOUVENIRS by Keith Chase ; 5. ECHO TAPS by J.L.Salter ; 6. WINGS OF FORGIVENESS by Haley Whitehall . And on THE KOREAN WAR , the American author recommends three historical novels : 1. THE KOREAN WAR by NORBERT L. MERCADO ( Philippines Historical Novelist ) ; 2. TRIP ANDERSON, USMC : THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED by Mary Cole ; 3 RETURN TO CORONADO by Philip Huber . The historical war novel THE KOREAN WAR , is an analytical narrative on why the bloody 1950-1953 Korean War took place . In the novel, historical novelist Norbert L. Mercado answers the nagging question : Why did the Korean War take place ? The Korean War took the lives of more than 4 million civilians , and more than one ( 1 ) million combatants from both sides - the Allies led by the US, and the communists ( North Korea, China, and Russia ) - and wrought havoc to the economies of the two Koreas. The novel is largely based on the accounts of Sgt. Jose Aban, a member of the Philippine Expeditionary Force To Korea ( PEFTOK ) . The Philippines was one of the 18 nations which sent volunteers to fight in the Korean War . Among the volunteers were the young Lt. Fidel V. Ramos, a West Point graduate, and Sgt. Jose Aban, a 19-year old college ( FEU) volunteer to the Korean War front. The Philippines sent more than 1,400 volunteers who fought the North Koreans and the Chinese communists with distinction . Gen. Douglas MacArthur was so proud of the bravery and daring in battle of the PEFTOK volunteers that he said in public : Give me 10,000 Filipino soldiers , with air and artillery support, and I will cross the Yalu River ! The Yalu River separated the Allied forces from the North Koreans and the Chinese soldiers. Mao Tse Tung committed 1.3- Million Chinese soldiers to the Korean War . More than 100,000 Chinese were killed, including Maos son. The Philippines lost 140 soldiers ( KIA ) , out of the more than 1,400 VOLUNTEERS. -30-
