GMPC recently had the great privilege and honor of printing Ron Galellas newest book: The Stories Behind the Pictures - A Guide to the Paparazzi Approach. For those of you not familiar with his name, you most certainly have seen his work. For over 50 years, Ron has photographed the most famous and celebrated people in the world - from Hollywood A listers, to royalty, heads of state and others. Known as a pioneer paparazzo and dubbed Paparazzo Extraordinaire by Newsweek magazine and The Godfather of the Paparazzi by Time magazine, Ron is regarded as the most controversial celebrity photographer in the world. Famous for snapping his now iconic photographs using his ability to outsmart the stars, capturing them at the perfect moment by popping out of a bush, jumping from around a corner, or hanging out the window of a taxi. He is widely known for his obsessive treatment of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the subsequent legal battles associated with it. Following Onassis around New Yorks Upper East Side for years, he jumped out of bushes as she cycled in Central Park, hovered around her tennis matches and even followed her to Greece, where he dressed up as a Greek sailor in order to snap pictures of her in a bikini. She eventually pressed charges against him, and he was forced to stay 100 yards from her home and 50 yards away from her and her children. On June 12, 1973, actor Marlon Brando punched Galella in the face outside a restaurant in Chinatown in New York City, breaking the photographers jaw and knocking out five of his teeth on the left side of his mouth. Galella had followed Brando, who was accompanied by Dick Cavett, to the restaurant after a taping of The Dick Cavett Show earlier that day. Mr. Galellas photographs can be seen in hundreds of publications including Time, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair, People, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Times and Life. His prints have been exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in both New York and San Francisco, the Tate Modern in London, and the Helmut Newton Foundation Museum of Photography in Berlin. Galella is the subject of a 2010 HBO documentary film directed by Leon Gast entitled Smash His Camera. Rons newest GMPC printed book The Stories Behind The Pictures is now available through rongalella and amazon.
