GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISE WITH ASSURANCE: For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath. (Hebrews 6:16, 17) The word confirmation (bebaiosis) was, for more than seven hundred years, the official word applied when legally guaranteed a sale. If we want to purchase something, we may be required to give a down payment as a token of our good faith that we will pay the balance sometime in the future. That payment serves as an oath that we will complete the purchase or forfeit the down payment. Failing to pay the final, full amount would bring punishment on the one not keeping his word. People of all nations have counted oaths to be serious in nature and binding on all parties who participate., When men have not regarded their oaths seriously, that lack of sincerity has always been indicative of a decline in morality. God wanted the matter of the promised inheritance settled once for all time. By His promise and oath, all doubts could be erased.
