GOGOI ASKED POWER DEPT NOT TO INCREASE RATES Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed the Power Department not to go in for a hike in power tariff. He issued this directive with a view to providing relief to the consumers, said an official press release. The power tariff hike approved by the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) would have come into force from December 1 next. According to the press release, Gogoi also asked the Finance Department to initiate necessary steps for providing subsidy to the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) in view of the above decision against effecting the November 21, 2014 AERC order to hike power tariff. It needs mention here that the AERC had approved on November 21, 2014 an average 13.1 per cent enhancement in power tariff with effect from December 1 next for the financial year of 2014-15. The Commission has stated that percentage-wise the increase in the tariff for different consumer categories ranges from around seven per cent to 18 per cent, depending on the prevalent and revised tariffs and cross-subsidy levels, without considering the targeted category-wise subsidy from the State Government. As per the AERC order, the power consumers belonging to Domestic A (1 kW to 4 kW) Category would have to pay an additional amount at the rate of Rs 0.31 to Rs 0.74 per unit, depending on the rate of consumption; Domestic B (5 kW to 20kW) Category consumers would have to pay the enhanced tariff at the rate of Rs 0.74 per unit, while the Below Poverty Line (BPL) Jeevan Dhara Category consumers would have to pay the additional tariff at the rate of Rs 0.21 per unit.
