GOMBE GOVT WILL SPEND N7.5 BN ON INFRASTRUCTURE AT MEDICAL COLLEGE October 04, 2013 13:38 NAN-HG-7 College Gombe, Oct. 5, 2013 (NAN) The Gombe State Government on Friday said it would spend N7.5 billion on infrastructures at the clinical unit of the College of Medicine of the Gombe State University. The Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Isa Wade, said this when he spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe. Wade said the amount would be spent on the construction of hostels, laboratories and other structures, needed for the commencement of the clinical studies at the college. He said the design of the buildings and furnishing of the clinical unit had been completed and that it would cost N7.5 billion. ``We are working with various bodies and institutions to see how we can realise that objective,” he said. The commissioner said the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had undertaken to construct hostel, lecture theatre, some administrative offices worth one billion naira. He said that the state government would also execute some structures at the site to enable the clinical studies to commence in 2014. Wade said the government would work with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). According to him, students in the preclinical level of the college are already progressing in their studies and by next year; the first set will go to the clinical level. Wade said work at the preclinical unit of the college, such as construction of buildings, procurement and installation of equipment and furnishing of the offices, had been completed. The Medical Director of FMC, Gombe, Dr Abubakar Saidu, told NAN that the Federal Government had announced plans to upgrade the centre to a teaching hospital. Saidu said that the memoranda of understanding between the Federal Government and the state government for the conversion of the centre to a teaching hospital had been drawn. He said apart from medicine, courses such as pharmacy, biochemistry, microbiology and other related courses would be undertaken at the college. ``The Executive Governor of Gombe State has requested for a formal permission of the President and the final approval. ``Everything is in place; the officials of Federal Ministry of Health have visited the hospital and have approved everything. ``We are just waiting for the approval to come and then we will be re-designated as a teaching hospital so that we will be taking the students of the Gombe State University,” he said. The medical director said a team from the NUC visited the college on Thursday on a fact finding mission on the facilities at the centre and the university. He said the centre had the required facilities, except for hostels and training laboratories, which he said, would be ready before the clinical training commences.
