GOOD NEWS for US 34 out of 44 blacklisted deemed universities gets UGC clean chit 23 Sep 20140 Comments The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given ‘Clean Chit’ to 34 out of 44 Deemed Universities Blacklisted by the Tandon Committee in 2009. The UGC had set up a committee under its Vice Chairman H Devaraj to check the present status of these universities. The Committee in its report has submitted that only 7-8 deemed varsities of the 44 originally blacklisted have been found inadequate. Reportedly, the UGC is likely to serve show cause notice to these institutions before blacklisting them. The seven Deemed Universities that have been recommended for Blacklisting are Bharath Institute of Higher Education, Chennai; Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Chennai; Vinayaka Missions Research Foundation, Salem and Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology, Thanjavur, Institute of Advanced Studies in Education and Janardhan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Udaipur and Maharishi Matkandeshwar University, Ambala. Originally 44 varsities were declared unfit for the Deemed status, the number came down to 41 as some of them voluntarily surrendered the deemed varsity tag and others went on to become institutes of national importance. The higher education regulatory body is likely to submit the recommendations of the Devraj committee to the Supreme Court onSeptember 30, 2014 when the matter comes up for hearing.
