GOODBYE, SWEET SMOOSH! Last year, in June, we rescued a beautiful house panther from Devore by the name of Brynn. She was taken in to foster by our amazing KD foster mom, Jenny Lewis. Jenny was only supposed to be her temporary foster momma. Brynn was set to travel to Arizona to be fostered by a longer term foster mom. However, not long after she was rescued, it was discovered that she was FeLV+. We were all devastated to hear this news. For those who dont know much about this disease, its one of the most deadly and devastating for kitties. Feline leukemia can bring on a host of unwanted issues that make kitties very sick. The average lifespan for a kitty diagnosed with FeLV is 3 to 5 years, maximum. FeLV+ kitties are also highly contagious to other cats and must be isolated away from them for the duration of their lifetime or risk infecting healthy cats with the virus. Not long after Brynns diagnosis, KD president Lauren Brandt came across a beautiful little Siamese kitten... who also tested positive for FeLV. Taking a chance, she approached Jenny and asked if maybe she and her partner might consider giving Rosie a home... and Brynn, who was not consigned to a solitary life, a friend. Jenny and her partner agreed to take the little kitten in since they had also decided to foster Brynn indefinitely. It didnt take long for Brynn and Smoosh, the new name they gave Rosie, to become fast friends. Inseparable friends! Over the last year there have been many ups and downs... and recently, for little Smoosh, more downs that ups. Her condition worsened and, yesterday, it was her time to say goodbye. We wish to thank Jenny for being so loving and wonderful, taking in two kitties who most would not have been able to take in for fear of spreading the disease to others. FeLV+ foster parents are rare and wonderful people - because they give of themselves wholeheartedly, knowing that sooner, rather than later, these special kitties will leave them and take a piece of their hearts with them as they go. We are all deeply saddened for Jenny, her partner and Brynn, who has lost her best friend. We wish beautiful little Smoosh a safe journey across the Bridge and hope to meet up with her again someday.
