GOODWILL MESSAGE DELIVERED BY THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF STATE, FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, PROFESSOR VIOLA ONWULIRI ON THE OCCASION OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF NIGERIA (NLN) GOLDEN JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON TUESDAY 2ND DECEMBER, 2014, AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE (ICC), ABUJA SALUTATIONS/PROTOCOL I feel highly honoured and pleased to be present as the Guest of Honour at the Golden Jubilee Anniversary Celebration of the National Library of Nigeria. A Golden Jubilee Anniversary Celebration is a historic occasion worth celebrating because it is a major plank of the educational transformation agenda of Mr. President. I therefore welcome everybody to this great event which is a memorable one in the life of the National Library of Nigeria. 2. The National Library of Nigeria is the nation’s apex library, an intellectual memory bank that is charged with the responsibility of providing Library Services to the public such as an intellectual memory bank that is charged with the responsibility of providing Library Services to the public such as it is being done by other National Libraries of the world. Over the past fifty (50) years National Library of Nigeria has successfully provided services such as: i. Supporting intellectual efforts in all activities directed at the progress and development of the country; ii. Ensuring availability of Comprehensive Collection of resources, materials and knowledge in existence in the world and outside the nations boundaries; and iii. Promoting a free-flow of knowledge between the nation and others. In all these and others, NationaI Library has performed excellently well. 3. Librarians all over the world are catalysts for human development and transmission of knowledge and culture. They also promote Civic awareness and support economic productivity and innovation in the society. Generally, what you know changes your life and distinguishes you from others. It is only through reading and learning that you get exposure that will stand you out among peers. Read vastly in and out of libraries and get informed and out differently. 4. As the National Library of Nigeria begins another phase which will gradually take it to 100 years of existence, the Director/CEO, Management and all staff should have it at the back of their minds that they will always provide effective services in line with the present global ICT trend and bridging the digital divide which is usually experienced in developing nations like ours. It is therefore worth mentioning that, in this digital era, the virtual library should take a centre stage of the institution’s services. 5. As I congratulate the National Library of Nigeria at 50, I particularly feel delighted in the concerted efforts of the Library in the reading campaigns regularly being carried out. Thus, with the Presidents Bring Back the Book pet project, it is not out of place to emphasize that the National Library of Nigeria should continue to take a pivotal role in this campaign. 6. To the Management and staff of National Library of Nigeria, I say hearty golden jubilee celebration. Do not relent in your efforts to make National Library of Nigeria a national information reference centre. 7. Thank you for your attention.
