GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE CALLS ON OBAMA TO EXTRADITE THE FUGITIVE AUNT AND GODMOTHER OF TUPAC SHAKUR FROM CUBA Governor Chris Christie is putting pressure on the Obama administration to extradite Joanne Chesimard aka Assata Shakur, the step-aunt and godmother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, back to the US from Cuba where she was granted political asylum by Fidel Castro 40 years ago. Assata is an American fugitive and Black Liberation Army member who escaped from prison after killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973. Governor Christies urging echoes a growing chorus of Republicans who are very angry with the Presidents decision to ease the relationship between the US and Cuba. Christie says Assatas asylum is an affront to every resident of our state, our country, and in particular, the men and women of the New Jersey State Police, who have tirelessly tried to bring this killer back to justice. The White House says they will continue to engage with the Cuban government to press for a return of U.S. fugitives from Cuba. Assata holds the dubious distinction of being the first female to make the FBIs most wanted terrorists list. A reward for information leading to her capture is set at $2 million.
