GOVERNANCE ,CITIZENS PARTICIPATION,ONE SUlEIMAN ABBA AND ONE ABBA MORO... The Kenyan example.... Last weeks attack on a bus in the outskirt of Kenya and Mondays massacre of 30 people at a quarry site led to the resignation of the Kenyan police chief(equivalent to our IG) and the removal of the interior minister..... Three things missing from our government officials vocabulary, resignation, responsibility and integrity..., Just like Oby Ezekwesili put it yesterday in London Government establishes agencies Citizens make those agencies institutions, democracy is a system of government but it is indeed the people that make democracy a strong institution by demanding standard and morals.. When one Abba Suleiman led an onslaught on the legislative arm at the National Assembly by illegally locking the gates of the legislators and throwing tear gas in the complex, some trivialized the issue as an attack on the Speaker missing the larger picture, that attack was an affront against the legislature as a democratic institution and the very foundation of our nascent democracy... But how many people protested against the police banditry? The citizens have a critical role to play in governance and that role is participation... After the disastrous Immigration job interview scam where a lot of young Nigerians died due to the carelessness of the ministry of interior and the immigration officials yet no took responsibilities... The president refused to act and the interior minister Abba Moro refused to resign... At that point, citizens of this country should have risen to the occasion if it meant going on the street to demand Abba Moros resignation, instead we continued with our life and the sad event was swept under the proverbial carpet of impunity Citizens can make stronger institutions by participating in the democratic experiencing,if our leaders refuse to do the right thing,it is the citizens duty to demand for action... Impunity is the silver lining that separates a democracy from military autocracy and totalitarian regimes.... Start participating,Governance is about the citizen !
