GPH and MILF peace panels laud EU Peace Journalism Awards COTABATO CITY, Oct. 20 (PIA) – Strengthening its commitment of support to the peace process, the European Union (EU) launched the Peace Journalism Awards to promote peace and development in Mindanao following the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) signing between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The Peace Journalism Awards is open to media practitioners in the country both in television and radio broadcast, print, photo and campus journalists with stories anchored on peace and development. Expressing full support to the endeavor, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), 6th Infantry Division of Philippine Army and MILF while acknowledging the vital and crucial role of media in the promotion of peace and prosperity, encourage the media to be fair and objective in covering and writing stories to inform and educate the public on crucial issues. OPAPP secretary Teresita Quintos-Deles in her message states “you have the power to mold public discourse and opinion and we encourage you to use this power to inform and educate the public on the peace process and its many complexities.” “We need you to continue reporting the peace gains as the Bangsamoro days determine deep steps to build in chartered course towards just and genuine peace and progress as indigent under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro,” Deles said. On the Army’s perspective, the Peace Journalism is present and visible in Mindanao because of the ongoing peace talks and the upcoming Bangsamoro Government. 6th ID Spokesperson Col. Dickson Hermoso said, “peace journalism stories will help in letting the whole world know it’s not only conflict after all that reigns in Central Mindanao and in island provinces. There are many stories that can be written here – about peace that can help us move forward, he added. Meanwhile, MILF Chief Negotiator Mohaqher Iqbal said, “apart from bringing all the truth in reporting, we must take responsibility of giving people the window to understand the human side of these reports.” EU encourages media practitioners here to join the Peace Journalism Awards as free trip to Brussels, Belgium for the opportunity to personally meet peace building institutions and fellow journalists awaits the grand winner.(IEroy/PBC/PIA Cotabato City)
