GRAPHIC PHOTOS in comments. Its been a tough day at the Rescue today. Little Summer and Flora, two of the Wonky Gang permanent sanctuary piggies, have spent the day at the vets having exploratory procedures carried out. Todays vet bill came to an impressive £213 and little Nester Nethie Ears, one of our rescue bunnies, has to go in for x-rays and blood tests on Monday as she has had a persistent urine infection which we cant shift, so the rescue piggies and bunnies wont be getting very much pocket money in the coming weeks Flora has had an abscess type wound in the top of her head for some time. We have been cleaning and flushing it and she has had several courses of antibiotics but nothing will shift the infection. Today our vet cleaned the area and opened the wound up to find a hole in her skull, the size of the top of a cotton bud We have no idea what has caused this hole ie did the abscess/infection eat into her skull or has something within her skull caused the abscess - its a very neat, round hole? Our vet has taken swabs to be sent off for analysis and the area has been flushed, cleaned and sewn back together to cover the hole. Poor little Flora looks like she has had a bit of a face lift, her ears are now at a jaunty angle bless her. She is initially on Septrin (antibiotic) and Metacam until the swab results come back and we may then need to swap to a more appropriate antibiotic. We discovered a mass in Summers abdomen last week and today we found she had a massive tumour in her uterus Her only real chance was to be spayed, so we made the decision to go ahead with the surgery in the hope it will give her some extra time with us. The tumour our vet uncovered was huge, it was attached at one end to Summers bladder, but thankfully the vet was able to ease it away, weve just got to hope that she managed to remove it all. She also discovered several small cysts on Summers ovaries, but they are out now as well. The whole thing weighed a huge 70g!! Like Flora she is on antibiotics, Baytril in this case and Metacam for pain relief. Both girls recovered well from their anaesthetics, in fact the vet nurses were impressed by the amount of food they tucked into, they obviously approved of the packed lunches I had sent in with them. They are now settled indoors for the night, munching happily on a selection of fresh veggies and snuggled down together on vet bed. For those that are interested I will attach some photos of the girls procedures, but as they are quite gruesome I will add them to the comments so you can skip them if you so wish. The photos below show the girls post op, both having a brief cuddle between being moved from their carrier to their indoor accommodation :)
