GRAVITY RIDERS DON”T NEED TO BE FIT EH?? Read the following before watching clip................. Here is an interesting bit of GOPRO, especially so, for those roadie/XC plodders that you (occasionally) come across; who think that gravity-fed MTBing does not require any real fitness. No real fitness required eh? Hmmmmm? Maybe so? I guess if you descend like grandma you can get by without it....... This is my most recent effort on a section called “Last Run”, on a very slippery & badly blown-out Thredbo flow trail. “Slippery”, thanks to a week of rain & hail and “blown-out”, thanks to 160 riders (me included) belting it the previous day . With regards to gravity fitness, please bear in mind that for more than 5 minutes leading-up to this final & delightful little 3.5 minute section; I had also been above my max heart rate the whole time. Being 49 years old, that max is supposed to be 171 bpm (220 minus your age). Below, is the time, speed & heart rate data that goes with this clip - “Last Run” – This effort - 3’:30” AVG SPEED – 32.6 km/h MAX SPEED – 45.7 km/h AVG HEART RATE (this effort) – 174 bpm MAX HEART RATE (this effort) – 176 bpm This effort had me in the top 10% outright on STRAVA (47th out of more than 470) & 2nd (by a few seconds) on the old kooks leaderboard (45-55). The bad news for the current KOM in that category, is that I have previously been 10 seconds quicker on this section (in dry conditions), with a sub-max effort. I have that one on rather dodgy helmet-cam & that was back before I got onto STRAVA :) For me though, the best bit about all this is that it was done on my XC bike (Giant Anthem 29er). That top little chariot, being the same bike I use for all my XC work. Sweet. Want to get amongst it in the what-you-are-not-supposed-to-do-on-an-XC-rig department? Want to get some extra “flow” happening with your Enduro/DH riding?? Want to dig on Thredbo? TFB are happy to arrange & provide training packages at Thredbo for individuals or small groups. Contact us for a quote. Our prices are very reasonable & we can even arrange reasonably-priced accommodation as well. That accommodation being very comfortable & comes complete with in-house kitchen. If you have not yet had the pleasure, we would love to introduce you to some of the greatest MTBing Australia has to offer & provide some highly effective skills training along the way. XC, Flow or DH. Take your pick :)
