GREAT INITIATIVE BY PROVIDING EFFICIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. A SUM INVESTED. RM32 BILLION. IN LINE WITH SUSTAINABILITY FRAMEWORK STAR: THOSE wishing to ditch their cars for public transport will be happy to note that money has been set aside to build two more new urban rail lines. Line 3 of the LRT system (LRT3) and Line 2 of the Klang Valley MRT (KVMRT) have been allocated RM9bil and RM23bil respectively. LRT3 will connect Bandar Utama to Klang via Shah Alam, while the 56km-long KVMRT Line 2 will connect Selayang with Putrajaya. Passengers using LRT3 will be able to change to the trains running on Line 1 of KVMRT that is now under construction at Bandar Utama. advertisement Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) lauded the Prime Minister’s announcement on this two important rail lines in his 2015 Budget proposals. Its group managing director, Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar, said the two lines would improve the connectivity and mobility of the rakyat in addition to enhancing their economic activities, productivity, and quality of life. “The proposed projects will bring the people in Greater Kuala Lumpur closer,” he said in a statement. Shahril added that the allocation for the proposed projects also demonstrated how the public transport sector is benefiting from the Government’s subsidy rationalisation exercise. “Although the government had recently reduced the fuel subsidy, we are pleased to note that it is allocating more funds to improve the public transport systems and services.” He revealed that Prasarana, which is currently building LRT2, had started preliminary planning on LRT3, and is in the process of obtaining approval from the Land Public Transport Commission on the proposed Railway Scheme. “Once it is approved, we will embark on a three-month public display and engagement process to obtain further public feedback on the project. “We would then further refine the plans for LRT3, including the alignment, as needed, before implementing the initiative, and we hope that the public will lend us their support during this vital process,” he said.
