GREECE I keep getting asked questions about Greece and I cannot give a good answer. My brother js far more clued up about Greek politics than I am. For what its worth I suspect Samaras will get his way and will get his President elected thereby avoiding early parliamentary elections. Given the dysfunctional and frankly corrupt nature of the Greek parliamentary system a combination of patronage and fear of an election wipe-out should (I would have thought) win over enough independent MPs to enable Samaras to get his way. Even if there is an election, it is not in my opinion a foregone conclusion Syriza would win it given that many older Greeks especially will vote heavily to keep the present government in power, given that for all its failings it is at least committed to keeping their pensions denominated in euros as opposed to worthless drachmas. Nor is it guaranteed if Syriza wins or becomes the biggest party that it could form a government or that such a government would survive for very long or if it did that such a government would follow the sort of policies Syriza has supported in opposition.
