GROUP MEMBER OF THE WEEK - Cherie Haggerty When did you start with the group? I started with the Galloway group during the Spring of 2013 after having been floundering through self training for about a year. When did you start running? MANY years ago, I ran cross country in high school, but it wasnt really cross country. It was just a few girls encouraged to run somewhere out of the track coachs way. I actually started running consistently the summer of 2009. I had gone thru the loss of a couple of my siblings (Im one of 9) and felt we were dying in the wrong order - younger ones were dying first. I was really angry and decided to get serious about my health and exercise. What was your first distance event? your latest distance event? My first distance event was the Dayton Air Force half marathon/marathon. Funny story about that - I was originally training for the half pig, but after experiencing a stress fracture and missing the Pig, my coach (Coach T) encouraged me to continue and train for the Air Force half. When I went to register, the half event was full and, again, I was encouraged to register for the full marathon then submit a downgrade to the half. Well..., the event organizers were no longer accepting downgrades. They told me I could still run the half, but would record a DNF for the actual event. Anyone that knows me knows that DNF is not in my DNA. Soooo... with my longest run being 14 miles, I went back to my fearless coach (Coach T) for a marathon strategy that would get me to the finish. With Tonys guidance I was successful in completing my first marathon after training for the half event. Ive been running crazy ever since. My most recent event was completing two back-to-back half marathons in the same weekend: Indy 500 / Pig Half Marathon with my very good friends Connie, Patty and Jim. Why do you like RUN-WALK-RUN? I really enjoy the Galloway training because it challenges me. The RUN-WALK-RUN method allows me to stay fresh longer and recover faster while still pushing myself to improve. Interests other than running Too many!!! Aside from running, my family is the most important aspect of my life. I am the luckiest Mom ever to have the 3 best kids in the world. I love my job, I am an accomplished seamstress, I am a mentor to an at risk child and also enjoy spending time reading, gardening and cooking. I guess you could call me Busy Spice :) EDITORS NOTE: Cherie was given the nickname of Grumpy Spice in honor of the Spice Girls musical group when she had a bad running day. Haha!
