GUAM Chess Championships Round 1 review. Manuel - Elmer Prudente 0-1 From what I saw this game @ board 1 had a very instructive value! Efren Manuel got the white pieces and Preduente counter attacked in a very open sicilian. The last position I had seen was one of equal material with each side having the rooks on with opposite colored bishops and many paws still on the board. The position was very dynamic due to the static advantages of each side. White had an more space overall and an easier time moving his pieces around while black had a better pawn structure and simpler plans. The game was decided as white felt the need to push for the win and attempted a piece sacrifice for a passed pawn. Briones - Tony Ross Whitt. 0-1 My game was also very instructive as I was up an exchange as early as move 6 in a French defense. After the game my opponent and I had a talk and I now realize that learning to get better at chess is no easy accomplishment. He argues that in many times during our game he thought he was better. He stated that when when he "sacked" the exchange he received compensation like better pieces and "time" and things of such nature. Lessoned learned for me here was material is material! If you are going to sack something for positional compensation make SURE that your opponent cannot simply exchange a few pieces and take that compensation away. Wen - Caluag, J 0-1 I looked at the game this game many times as it was the one closest to me. This game highlights our clubs youngest players (both in their teens) and was well balanced. In my experience both players have a natural feel for the game and are sure to become very strong players. The game was an open and very sharp/tactical beast and I would love to see a copy of and put it into a computer. The first position I was had Wen (with the white pieces) attacking on the uncastled king. This must have been around move 20 or so and material was equal. Jed defended and took the initiative around move 35 by controlling the 2nd rank and eventually mating. I have one comment that I must stress here. Both players were playing exceptionally fast! I did the math and it appears on average both players made their moves faster that 45 seconds each. Just a note that this is NOT a good habit. Even if you are winning try to slow down..find the best move! Boy Orio - Leon Ryan 1-0 Buenaventura - Jingco 1-0 Prado - Lacno
