GUINEA-BISSAU: Voters turn out for presidential elections Guinea-Bissau peacefully voted for a new president this past Sunday, marking the countrys first election since their 2012 military coup. About 95 percent of potential voters registered to cast their ballot for the 13 presidential candidates. Polling was monitored by 550 international observers and 4,200 Bissau-Guinean and West African soldiers. A presidential runoff is scheduled for May 18 if no candidate emerges as the clear winner. Comment: With a history of coups, no elected leader has served a full term since Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal in 1974. Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stated prior to Sunday that all the candidates have affirmed their willingness and determination to respect the results of the election.
