GUN OF THE DAY – Townsend Whelen Winchester 95 Rifle We like to highlight special treasures in our collection for our GOTD program and this one also allows us to spotlight our new Springfield, Missouri museum. Colonel Townsend Whelen was a renowned American hunter and outdoor writer of the last century and his legendary Winchester Model 1895 rifle in .40-72 represents a significant part of his story. Customized by Whelen with a new heavy barrel in 1900 to replace a half-octagonal one that Whelen thought “too whippy,” this big-game rifle was a constant companion on his hunting trips to British Columbia and elsewhere in North America. Today, this fine Winchester lever-action is part of an extensive timeline of hunting arms in the NRA National Sporting Arms Museum at Bass Pro in Springfield, Missouri. If you’ve ever wanted to see how American hunting arms evolved over the centuries – plan to visit the Midwest!
