GWEN GOES TO TRIAL TOMMOROW.9AM IN STEPHENVILLE IF ANYONE CAN SHOW UP AND SUPPORT HER..SHE ONLY FOUND THIS OUT TODAY..AND WE STILL DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS POOR DOG IS DOING AFTER BEING PUT BACK WITH AN ABUSIVE OWNER...Press Release issued by SCAPA WHEN THIS HAPPENED HIGH PROFILE LAWYER OFFERS PRO BONO SERVICE TO SHELTER MANAGER APRIL 24, 2013 -- Steve Marshall of the Roebothan, McKay, and Marshall law firm in St. Johns has come forward offering pro bono service to Gwen Samms, President of the Bay St. George Society for the Care and Protection of Animals (SCAPA) in Stephenville. On March 20, 2013, Samms was charged with theft under $5000 after the RCMP used a warrant to return to a neglectful owner a dog they had entrusted to her care. Six weeks had passed since the owner had been told he could have the animal back, but Deamon the Husky had not been claimed and -- in light of the standard 72-hour holding period -- it was Samms understanding that he was now the property of SCAPA. However, the Police were advised by the provinces Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Hugh Whitney, that SCAPA does not have that right. In fact, the only group included under the current provincial Animal Health and Protection Act is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Samms said, I hope Daemons story and my subsequent charge will help bring much-needed attention to some of the areas of the Animal Health and Protection Act that are seriously lacking and/or inadequate and be a catalyst for change. For example, there are many groups in this province rescuing, sheltering, and otherwise saving the lives of animals every day. Some, like SCAPA, are well established and have been around for as long as a decade. Its time government recognizes and acknowledges the major contributions these non-SPCA affiliated groups are making. Court is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Monday, June 17, 2013, in Stephenville. Samms will be represented by Steve Marshall and colleague Amanda MacDougall.
