The terrain changes with each day as one traverses from lush fields to the scorching and desolate sands of the Gobi Desert. There is much along the way on offer for the modern traveler, but for those in the days gone by, the sight of an oasis was nothing less than a blessing. The cultural legacy of the route is still vividly visible in the Mogao Caves. The route has also, over the years, inspired many a wanderer and poet to head out to explore different cultures.
