Gandhi came back to India by the end of 1914 after two decades in South Africa. By then Jinnah had become one of the most prominent leaders of the Congress. Gandhi at that time believed that the British Empire existed for the welfare of the world. Gandhi first step on arriving in Bombay was to call on ghe Governeor and promised loyalty to the British rule in India and unconditional sp in the war effort. He offered to lead ambulance work in Mesopotamia and was with difficulty prevented from offering himself as a combatant soldier. At the end of Jun 1915 govt of India honoured Ganghi by conferring the Kaiser e Hind medal for his services in South Africa. (From the book Secular and nationalist Jinnah by Ajeet Jaweed)
