Gary Curtis Carter was born on this day... 60 years ago. Things I will always remember… Being in every class with you at Robbins School, except third grade. The picture of the eagle that you drew in Eleanor Gray’s second grade class… you could’ve been a Van Gogh. Catching about a million tadpoles and crawdads at the creek. Fishing with you and Slick. Camping out and one of Ted’s friends wiping his ass with poison ivy. Playing basketball, football and baseball and watching you try to keep your beat-up, taped-up glasses on your head, you still kicked ass… what a natural athlete. Growing up in Downtown Lexington, The Carolina Theatre and YMCA. Hiking Appalachian Trail every Easter… Damascus, Mount Rogers, WhiteTop Mountain and blonde Lebanese. Duchess, Ace and losing Sgt. Pepper. The dogs… My God, the dogs. Cindy, Duchess, Rap, Clapton, JJ, Cayman… your undying devotion. The Music...Hitchhiking to Charlotte for concerts… Faces, Free, Cactus, Leon Russell, Allman Bros., Led Zeppelin and The Who. Your mother busting our ass before the Led Zeppelin concert. Duke Basketball. Your daily grilling adventures and a mescaline enhanced, two-day vegetable soup extravaganza. Driving me on a one-way trip to Orlando with all my shit in the back of the Bronco… washing ourselves in the waters of New Smyrna Beach… you and Gordy leaving me, sad and lonely, in the heart of a thunderstorm. High Rock. Trips to the Caymans and Miss Nevada’s panties. Double dating with Debra Cannon and Sally Myers, parking at Reeds Baptist. Your wedding day and the day she left. The night she came back. The day Wesley was born… the day Debra died. Spending the last two nights with you… rolling you out to gazebo for one last smoke and hearing last words as you drifted off to sleep, one last time. You always had an opinion and an answer, you were dependable and convicted. You could’ve been anything… You were my friend.
