Gary Howard, lived downstream on Humbug Creek from me. About a quarter mile. I noticed the good bedrock on his stretch of creek, and asked him,if I could dig up the fortune of gold in his front yard. I have an overactive optimism. It was small, as fortunes go. But the friendship had a bigger value. The mining water went scarce by mid July, but by then, he had taught me, that some marines, played as mean a pool game as an old Navy vet. On a good day, after breakfast, Gary was happy to teach any of us about being a straight shooter. Gary passed away, last night, due to complications of diabetes. The fortune in a friendship I gained from Gary is priceless.
