Gary Smith of The Thinking Vegan does an excellent job laying the whole phenomenon of ex-vegans out on the table, fleshing it out, getting to the root of whats going and spotlighting the surface decisions being made without a full understanding of what living [ethically] vegan means. Its so important to make the distinction between LIVING a vegan life (completely, based in belief and values and unconditional and conscious compassion) and EATING a plant-based diet (for health, for fun, just food-based). A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square. I understand and appreciate that the words vegan and veganism are being utilized more in the mainstream; however, each of these words dont exist on just a surface, topical, strictly dietary level. Veganism is a way of living. It means a lot, not only to the person who lives consciously excluding all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, but also to the animals and to our planet as a whole. Please read Garys article. So important. After you check it out, here are two must reads about veganism and about plant-based health: onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/beyond-im-not-vegan-anymore/, bonzaiaphrodite/2013/01/facing-failing-health-on-a-vegan-diet/ (OH! And I have experienced fantastic health for 5 years eating completely plant-based, majority whole foods but definitely with processed foods in there. FORKS OVER KNIVES is a fantastic resource and has many others to refer to. So, I do believe - and have lived - a vegan life thats for the animals AND also for my best health.)
