Gathering – A 5 day trip to Belgium. Hubby had always wanted to take part in the Ypres Lotus Day so this was my big chance to visit Ypres. During these 5 days we decided to visit the Menin Gate Memorial where one of my grandmother’s cousins from Shetland has his name, George Leask who was in the 16th Bn Canadian Inf. It is a wonderful building in Ypres. The large Hall of Memory contains names on stone panels of 54,896 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Salient but whose bodies have never been identified or found. At 8 pm every evening since 1928 crowds gather at the Last Post”. Buglers from the local fire brigade close the road which passes under the memorial and sound the Last Post. People in the crowd were mainly British. Tears streamed down our cheeks on hearing the buglers and all this time not a squeak from the crowd!
