Gaza conflict is an important story and needs to be covered by the media. But it has become an obsession with saturation coverage pushing out close scrutiny of other key conflicts around the world. It came at a very heavy price with the shooting down of the Malaysian airliner over Ukraine yesterday. The fact is Russian separatists shot down both a Ukrainian fighter and transport aircraft last week using sophisticated missile batteries provided by Putin. The media with all its foreign correspondents focused on Gaza completely overlooked this key development. They should have been all over this story and putting pressure on civil aviation authorities to shut down the air corridor to commercial airliners. Instead they forgot the story focused on Gaza only and the planes kept flying through an extremely dangerous war zone. Those 298 people could have been alive today if that air corridor was closed and the media have some responsibility for allowing this tragedy to happen
