Geelani ridicules Govt announcement to release a few youth Says, 574 Kashmiris Serving Detention In Jails Srinagar, Aug 4: The chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani on Saturday termed as joke the government announcement regarding the release of a few detainees beforeEid-ul-Fitr. “Nearly 574 Kashmiri youth are languishing in local and other prisons of India without constitutional justification. The majority of them are not being released because of political vendetta, Geelani said in a statement. “At least 50 political prisoners are languishing in jails for the past five to ten years and equal number of youths is severing life imprisonment,” he said, adding that “Muhammad Shabir, Raj Deen and three other pro-freedom youth from Kathua and Jammu have been awarded death sentences while ignoring all norms. Masarat Alam Bhat, Mir Hafiz Ullah, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Muhammad Rafiq Ganai, Shakeel Ahmad Bhat, Fayaz Ahmad, Nasser Abdullah, Nisar Ahmad Bhat and Shabir Ahmed Wani were booked from five to nine times repeatedly under PSA. Those who were awarded life sentence include Dr Muhammad Qasim Faktoo, Ghulam Qadir Bhat, Dr Muhammad Shafi Khan, Muhammad Ayub Dar, Muhammad Ayoub Mir, Nazir Ahmad Sheikh , Muhammad AminDar, Muhammad Sayeed Butt, Fayaz Ahmed Tantray, Noor Muhammad, Muhammad Amin Wani, Engineer Farooq Ahmad, Muhammad Ishaq Palla, Shabir Ahmad Bhat, Mushtaq Ahmed Malla, Feroz Ahmad Bhat and Javiad Ahmad Khan. The pro-freedom leaders lodged in Tihar jail include Tehreek- e- Hurriyat, Ghulam Muhammad Bhat, Dr Tariq Ahmed Dar, Muhammad Amin Shah, Muhammad Hussain, Abdul MajidMagray and Farooq Ahmad Daga.” “Kashmir is a political issue. As a matter of fact all those people related to this conflict are to be treated in the category of political prisoners. Their prosecution under criminal laws and sentences awarded to them are not justified,” said Geelani, demanding immediate release of all detainees. Geelani said, “It has been proved that Omar Abdullah leads a most weak and incompetent administration and till date he has not able to release even a single prisoner. All the matters are being dealt by Home Ministry of India. Even a peon in the HomeMinistry can oppose any move in this regard.” Referring to the statement of SSP,Srinagar, that 15 percent of youth have been arrested and police is looking for remaining 85 percent, Geelani said, “It is ironical that, on one hand, the announcement is made to release a few prisoners, on the other, a fresh arrest drive has been started by Kashmir police.” Geelani said. Amir Hamza, Abdul Gani Bhat, Sheikh Altaf and other scores of pro freedom leaders were arrested after the Gool Ramban tragedy, he added. Meanwhile, Geelani has expressed deep concern over theuse of pellet guns against peaceful demonstrators and expressed sympathy with injuredyouth. “Administration is responsible for creating chaos and war like situation in the city. There is no justification for deploying heavy contingent of CRPF and police,” he said, adding that “Since these two forces were involved in large scale massacres in 2008 and 2010, theyouth are justified in expressing their resentment and hatred against them.” Condemning the ‘unjustified’ police action, Geelani said due to the use of pellet guns several youth had lost their eyesight and have become disabled for ever. He appealed to the human rights organizations to take notice of this serious situation and take steps to protect precious human lives. @owner
