Gender roles. smh Its so hard sometimes!! I have a little boy who is being raised by lesbians. Let me say right now, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! What I have prided myself on is not pressing gender roles upon the children. There is nothing wrong with little boys playing with dolls during role play. They are training to become daddies and take care of their children. Anyway, with this little boy, I find myself checking myself A LOT! When little boys live with women, they sometimes do things that may come off as feminine, like certain mannerisms, for instance. That doesnt really mean anything. You still see them playing with trucks, cars, etc. With this little boy its different. He likes ALL the girl things. He likes to dress up, put scarves on his head, dance a certain way when I put on music, etc. The kids will even remark that he acts like a girl. The problem Im having is with ME though, not him. For instance, when he puts the scarves on, I want to say, Boys dont wear scarves like that. I NEVER do; I curb that impulse. When he puts the pink cowgirl boots on as well. It really bothers me, a person in the Child Development field, to feel this way. I thought I was more progressive(?) (Is that the word Im looking for?) I understand now, how difficult it must be for parents who see these tendencies in their children and dont know how to deal. I kinda see it from that point of view now. Make no mistake, I would NEVER do or say anything to him one way or the other, he is who he is. THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
