Genealogy Roadshow: Public Broadcasting System (PBS) is offering a "Genealogy Roadshow" series that will air every Monday at 9 PM, September 23-October 14. (check your local PBS for the time). “Genealogy Roadshow” is similar to the “Antiques Roadshow”; instead of learning the authenticity of knickknacks and family heirlooms, contestants learn about their lineage. Experts in genealogy, history, and DNA testing will use information provided by everyday people (participants) from four different cities, Nashville, Austin, Detroit, and San Francisco, to solve their genealogical questions. The first episode begins in Nashville. Two participants believe they may be related to Davy Crockett; another thinks she may belong to the infamous Hatfield clan; and a third believes her family history may include a former president, a famous singer and a notorious criminal. The Detroit-based episode on Sept. 30, will appeal to history and ancestry buffs alike. In this episode, filmed in July at a historic Indian Village home, lifelong Michigan resident Michile Stoutenburg finds out if her family lore is true, if she really is a descendant of Abraham Lincoln. Also, Wayne State University student, Charissa Joy Los, who joined the show after her birth grandmother submitted her story, delves into the history of her birth parents. The 22-year-old Detroiter grew up in Holland with her adoptive parents, Scott and Wendi Los. She knew a lot about her birth mother’s history but little about her birth father’s. Her birth is African-American, whose relatives were part of the Great Migration to Detroit. Los, who is studying music, says she hopes her appearance on “Genealogy Roadshow” will inspire other young people to become interested in their ancestry.
