Genealogy Tidbits: LaClair’s and Civil War Service: I have two Great Grand Uncles, brothers of my GG Grandfather Francis LaClair. The first is Alexander, born Fort Covington, New York, Dec 1837, enrolled in New York Volunteers, Company M, Heavy Artillery, as a Private in Sep 1864. Two months into service, and while marching through winter rains in Virginia, he caught a severe cold and spent the next four months in various hospitals in Virginia and Maryland. He was discharged Jan 1865 with a wartime disability pension. He died 3 Dec 1891, near Hogansburg, at the age of 53. His younger brother, Joseph, born Hogansburg, New York, Feb 1842, and enrolled in NY 98th Regiment, Company H, as a Private, in Nov 1861. Joseph served two relatively uneventful years and reenlisted Dec 1863. Then in May 1864 he was injured in the battle of Drury’s Bluff, Virginia. In Sep 1864, he was injured a second time, this time at the battle at Chaffin’s Farm, Virginia. He was honorably discharged from service Aug 1865, and passed away Apr of 1900, near Brasher Falls at age 58.
