General History for Friday, 8/16/13 1620 – The Mayflower set sail for America from Plymouth, England. 1920 – Shortstop Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians died after being hit in the head with a ball thrown by New York Yankees pitcher Carl May. It marked the first casualty in a major league game. 1948 – Babe Ruth, idol of millions of baseball fans, died in New York at the age of 53. 1954 – Sports Illustrated was first published by Time, Inc. 1956 – Bela Lugosi, the actor who originated the role of Dracula onscreen, died at the age of 73. As designated in his will, he was buried in the cape and tuxedo he wore as Dracula. 1974 – Henry Foster Welch died at the age of 74. He was the voice of Popeye, Bluto and Olive Oyl. 1987 – A Northwest Airlines flight crashed while taking off from Detroit, killing 156 people on the flight number 255.
