General News of Saturday, 1 February 2014 Source: citifmonline Weather variability cause of premature rains - Meteorologist Kaneshie Floods A Senior Meteorologist, Mr. Muller Tsatsu has attributed the premature rains that the country is experiencing to variations in weather conditions. There are two major rainy seasons in the country. The first starts from April to July, and the second rainy season in September through to November. The country has, however, been experiencing heavy rains in recent times ahead of the rainy season. Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Muller Tsatsu attributed the problem to certain slight changes in weather conditions. He also stated that the Harmattan in the Northern part of Ghana was being influenced by very low temperatures in Europe. He described the heavy rains that hit Accra as a “local thunderstorm.” Some parts of Accra were flooded by Fridays heavy rainfall. According to reports, the lorry station at Circle, parts of Asylum down and Kaneshie have all been flooded making it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to move freely. Some drivers who spoke to Citi News say they have been stuck in their cars due to the traffic, adding that a passenger who was due to deliver has given birth in the car. Commenting on the flooding, the Mayor of Accra, Mr. Oko Vanderpuije said “flood prone areas will consistently be affected until the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) takes a reactive step to dredge the Odaw and Korle Lagoon” In that regard, he stated that the AMA was taking steps to dredge the river to alleviate the challenges associated with heavy rains.
