General strike IMPHAL, Mar 8: Denouncing the abduction of two labourers engaged in road construction work leading to Kasom Khullen, the Tangkhul Naga Aze Longphang (TNAL) and Kasom Khullen Sub-Division Development Asso- ciation (KKSDDA) have threatened to call a State-wide 48 hours general strike from March 11 midnight. Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, TNAL chairman J Mayarmi said that they would call a general strike from March 11 midnight in case the two labourers who were abducted by unidentified persons on March 2 are not released by March 11. He further urged the concerned UG group to give a convincing explanation for abducting the two labourers. He went on to claim that TNAL is the apex body of 87 Tangkhul villages. KKSDDA chairman Jajo Robertson said that construction work of Thoubal-Kasom Khullen road has just started with monetary assistance from Asian Development Bank and DoNER Ministry as implementing agency. The same work is being executed by Guwahati based Anupam Bricks and Concretes Industries Pvt Ltd. Two labourers working under the company namely Ch Ajit (27) from Rangir Ghat Part-II of Cachar district, Assam and Debashish Mondal (35) from Suri village of Birbhum district, West Bengal were abducted in the wee hours of March 2 from Sombrei village which is within Ukhrul district but under the jurisdiction of Yairipok police station. Debashish is excavator operator and Ajit is road roller driver. It was the ninth case of abduction by armed persons from TNAL areas. Even though these cases of abduction are very sensitive, the State Government has been paying little attention. Since the past, transport infrastructure in Kasom Khullen sub-division is pathetic and it does not get any benefit from the Government sponsored welfare programmes. People were elated on learning about the ADB’s road project but today Government’s inattention has anguished them, Robertson said. The disruptive act of abduction is highly condemnable. On the other hand, a public meeting convened by TNAL and KKSDDA yesterday resolved to deploy volunteers for checking all kinds of disruptive activities against development works taken up in the sub- division. It further agreed to award stringent punishment if any person/family living in TNAL area is found harbouring abductors. Sangai express.....
