Generally when everyone I know reads a book and likes it, I also do. But I just finished American Gods and I hated it. It had a propulsive first 100 pages and some cool imagery, yes. But it went on and on (this will too). Maybe theres a point to it (Americans care more about technology than Gods? The mixture of people/belief in America make it unique but that might be going away?), but how could you tell when its like 700 pages of meaningless events and opaque symbolism that draws attention to itself. Neil Gaiman can create compelling imagery, but he cant seem to tell a concise story or make work that has a point. Thatd be more tolerable if the work didnt pretend it had important things to say.
