Generation Citizen Greater Boston Program Manager Generation Citizen is pleased to announce that we are hiring a Greater Boston Program Manager to round out our Boston team. The Boston Program Manager is responsible for the management and implementation of programming in Greater Boston. This involves dynamic and challenging strategic development of programming, volunteer leadership development, school sales, program quality oversight and the potential to manage a Program Associate in the near future. The Program Manager reports directly to the Greater Boston Site Director and works collaboratively with the Boston Advocacy Manager and National Director of Programming. We are looking for exceptional professionals with the proven ability to achieve ambitious goals through creativity and persistence. About Generation Citizen: Generation Citizen (GenerationCitizen.org) is an innovative, quickly scaling non-profit that works to ensure that every young person in the United States receives an effective action civics education. GC envisions a country of young people working as active and effective citizens to collectively rebuild our American democracy. As part of our core program, we partner college student Democracy Coaches with classroom teachers to teach an action civics course in which teens solve local problems by working with local leaders. Since 2009, GC has provided its in-school action civics course to over 8,000 Greater Boston young people, partnering with over 40 middle and high schools and engaging over 500 college DCs across 8 local campuses. GC is looking to recruit exceptional people to effectively run our programs and develop our talent as we prepare to deepen our local impact. Hours and Terms: • Position will be full-time with start date mid to late August 2014. Some evenings and weekends may be required. • Position will be based in Boston, MA. While access to a car is not necessary, candidates should expect to travel frequently throughout the Greater Boston area via public transportation. • We ask candidates to be willing to make at least a 2-year commitment to Generation Citizen. Specific job responsibilities will include: • Strategic Program Planning & Growth o Work closely with the Site Director and National Director of Programming to identify and deepen partnerships to ensure growth and impact. o Establish a pipeline of potential school partners for future expansion in Greater Boston. o Support the institutionalization of GC on college campuses by establishing strategic partnerships and building a leadership pipeline of college volunteers. o Build and strengthen partnerships with community organizations and local representatives to support high quality programming. o Identify and manage opportunities for program pilots that allow GC to extend our reach and impact. o Identify opportunities for GC to serve as a thought-leader in action civics education. • School Partner Recruitment & Management: o Lead efforts to meet and set school sales goals (ex. Generation Citizen is offered in 120 classes across 35 schools for the 2014-15 school year), and maintain up-to-date recruitment plan in Salesforce (training provided). o Lead initial orientation for all partner teachers, and provide ongoing support to ensure teachers are well equipped to work with Democracy Coaches to lead their classes in successful projects. o Establish and manage relationships with administrators to lay groundwork for successful and enduring school partnerships. • College Partner & Volunteer Management: o Building strategic relationships with faculty and administration on partner university and college campuses. o Providing intensive coaching and supervision to Greater Boston’s college student leaders, empowering them to build a committed and highly effective cohort of college student Democracy Coaches and to achieve their chapter growth, retention, and quality goals. o Planning and implementing trainings for Democracy Coaches and chapter leaders. o Conducting regular classroom observations in GC’s partner schools and providing constructive feedback to Democracy Coaches. o Tracking class and chapter progress and rigorously managing to quality benchmarks and milestones. o Working with Advocacy Manager to coordinate community partners to support students’ action projects and align to ongoing campaigns and citywide advocacy activities. o Working with Advocacy Manager to provide volunteer support for civics education demandbuilding campaign • Program Evaluation & Operations: o Managing program monitoring and evaluation, including distribution and collection of student, teacher, Democracy Coach, and Chapter Director surveys and documentation of classroom observations according to site evaluation plan. Using data to identify strengths and areas of growth for continual improvement. o Leading planning and execution of Civics Day (at which students present their action projects to community leaders and public officials) at the end of each semester. Tasks may include: vendor research and management, school attendance and logistics, award program oversight. o Adapting nationally created program materials to meet local needs. o Providing as-needed support to Site Director for fundraising planning and events. Qualifications: • Significant experience setting and exceeding ambitious growth goals through creativity and persistence. • Experience managing volunteers, including volunteer recruitment, training, leadership development, and volunteer accountability, preferably with college volunteers. • Experience with sales, business development, fundraising or similar, resulting in a demonstrated ability to establish and manage high-stakes partnerships. • Demonstrated ability to respond proactively to highly unstructured environments and to navigate challenging situations and challenging relationships with creativity and diplomacy. • Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills, and demonstrated ability to connect to, engage, and inspire others. • Passion for Generation Citizen’s vision of a country of young people working as active and effective citizens to collectively rebuild our American democracy. • Ability and excitement to model Generation Citizen’s Core Values: Grassroots Change, Systemic Impact, Collaboration and Diversity, Action, and Open-mindedness. The following characteristics are ideal, although not required: • Experience working in politics, ie. through an elected official’s office, government agency, political campaign, or community organization engaging in issue-based advocacy. • Experience working with middle or high school aged youth, either in a classroom or in a community setting. • Knowledge of the Greater Boston community.
