Genetically Modified Wheat Found in Oregon In 2005 biotech - TopicsExpress

Genetically Modified Wheat Found in Oregon In 2005 biotech company Monsanto developed a genetically modified wheat that tolerates the weedkiller glyphosate. However, it was rejected by wheat growers in the country as they did not want to commercialise it until it has been approved by the United States Department of Agriculture. Monsanto did not get approval from the government, and dropped the project thereafter. However, a farmer in eastern Oregon recently found some wheat plants growing in his farm, believed to be the genetically modified wheat that was never approved to be grown and commercialised. The United States Department of Agriculture is now investigating the case to find out where the mysterious wheat came from, since Monsanto had supposedly completely removed the genetically modified crops. In 2006 several American rice exporters had to shut down their firms after traces of genetically modified rice were found in the market. Therefore, wheat exporters are now worried that they may face a similar situation should it be found out that the genetically modified wheat has spread into their exports.
