Geoenvironmental Group 3 I. Climate change is the consequence of unchecked pollution A. Defining the terms related to climate change and explaining the process of climate change. (Fontanilla) B. What causes climate change? (Jurquina) 1. Expansion of the greenhouse effect due to presence of large amounts of heat trapping gases that are attributed by human activities. C. What are the evidences for the rapid change in climate? (Fontanilla) 1. Sea level rise is caused primarily by two factors related to global warming: the added water coming from the melting of land ice and the expansion of sea water as it warms. 2. Given that there is an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases that traps heat coming from the sun, there is also an increase in global temperature. 3. Large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide in the ocean cause acidification that has a negative effect on corals. 4. Extreme events are attributed from increase in temperature. These events include longer droughts, stronger storms, farther storm surges etc. D. How does it affect us? (Jurquina) 1. Increase in temperature or flooding causes spread of diseases and vectors. 2. Increased evaporation of water causes drought and extreme rains. 3. Increase in temperature causes crops die thus result to poor production. 4. Increase in sea level causes permanent inundation of coastal resource. E. What are solutions for climate change? (Fontanilla & Jurquina) 1. Using renewable resources such as solar power and biofuels decrease the amount of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. 2. Energy conservation reduces the amount of energy to be used and the main by-product which is carbon dioxide. 3. Sequestration or the long term trapping of carbon dioxide by plants. II. Introduction to Sustainable Development (Josephine Elena Daitao) A. Definition of Sustainable Development – ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. B. Key Characteristics of Sustainable Development 1. Economic, social and environmental aspects of any action are interconnected. 2. Nature of sustainable development is dependent on the geography and location of the country 3. Impact of action may cause harm to the environment C. Nature and Causes of Unsustainable Development a. Excessive resource depletion and or pollution b. Deforestation leads to pasture degradation and affects the agriculture sector c. Excess consumption relative to investment, such that the accumulation of produced capital is too little to offset the depletion of natural capital D. The Cure for Unsustainable Development a. Three Pillars of Sustainability a. Interlinkages, especially between resource systems, environment and economy b. Dynamic efficiency especially regarding conservation of resources and environment c. Intertermporal equity which is increasingly represented as intertemporal neutrality b. Implementation of Environmental Policies – policy models of global warming containing both climate change and economic system provide well developed examples, in as much as they solve for specific policy prescription. (Mark Kevin Baguio) E. The role of the different actors in the society regarding sustainable development 1. Private Sectors – the ones who utilize the resources for manufacture products and services. 2. Individuals– the ones who consumes the product and services 3. Government – the ones who impose policies regarding the proper use of resources 4. Corporations – regulate the use of resources in the production of goods and services 5. International agencies and Organization that help in the support for sustainable development programmes III. Yolanda is the strongest typhoon ever recorded that hit the face of the earth. (Jea Athena Gloria) A. Tacloban is the most destructed city where the typhoon passed. B. The different perspective of actors affected in Tacloban. 1. The government does its best to resolve the problems brought by the storm surge. 2. Private sectors were hesitant to continue their business in Tacloban. 3. Citizens were having a hard time to recover from their traumatic experience. (Cherry Dignadice) C. These are reasons that provoke people to either choose to stay or to leave Tacloban. 1. The cost of products in Tacloban is very high. 2. The availability of products is limited. 3. The unexplainable fear of what the future may bring. D. Reasons why dont people evacuate before storms E. Causes those victims to stay given the strong warning signs and opportunity for shelter. F. People who ignore evacuation orders 1. Leaver vs Stayer 2. Conjoint vs disjoint model cictizens G. Reasons why they put their own lives and lives of rescuers at risk IV. Philippines: A Disaster Prone Country (Kryss Jahre Castillo) A. Definition of Terms 1. Typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone that develops in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean between 180o and 100o. 2. Hurricane is a storm with violent wind in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. 3. Tsunami is a large sea wave caused by an earthquake, a submarine landslide or other disturbance. 4. Volcanic eruption is the sudden occurrence of violent discharge of steam and volcanic material. 5. Earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movement within the earth’s crust. 6. Landslide is the sliding down of a mass of earth from mountain or cliff. 7. Tropical storm is a localize, very intense low-pressure wind system, forming over tropical oceans and with winds of hurricane force. 8. Tropical depression is an atmospheric low-pressure system originating in the tropics, specifically, a tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustain wind speed is 38 miles per hour or less. 9. Flood is an overflowing of large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially, over what is normally dry land. B. Perspective of Actors 1. The frequent disasters hinder the Philippine government’s efforts to reduce the incidence of poverty and reduce the number of people and assets vulnerable to these hazards. 2. The private sectors prioritize funding disaster preparedness and risk reduction in addition to relief. C. Reasons why the Philippines is a Disaster Prone Country 1. Philippines is one of the countries at the Pacific Ring of Fire. 2. The country is an archipelago and is surrounded by bodies of water. 3. Philippines is an earthquake belt. (Maria Dana Greta Arandia) 4. The position of the Philippines is located near the equator. D. Effects of being a Disaster Prone Country 1. There are different calamities happening. 2. Earthquake incident increases through time. 3. There are many active volcano in the country. 4. Typhoons and storms occur. E. Ways on how Filipinos can cope up to this situation 1. Disaster Risk Reduction Management is taught to every citizen. 2. Awareness to the calamities by using television and radio is widely used. 3. The people are informed to be prepared to what will happen in the calamity.
