George Handley just gets wiser and better. He had me at "poetry," of course, but beyond that this little essay is an earnest and fecund meditation on civil discourse. When I hear of--or experience--an unfriending on Facebook or worse, in real life, over a mere difference of opinion or expression, I admit to a degree of despair over the political future of western democracies and, by dint of influence, the democratic model everywhere else. But the experience also elevates in my regard those persons with whom I do have disagreements, even animated ones, who can still be my friends, can still associate with me, and me with them, however disparate we think we are politically or theologically or socially.
