As the follow-up to 1970s acclaimed All Things Must Pass and his pioneering charity project, The Concert for Bangladesh, it was among the most highly anticipated releases of that year. Living in the Material World was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America just two days after release, on its way to becoming Harrisons second (and final) number 1 album in the United States, and spawned the international hit Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth). It also topped the charts in Canada and reached number 2 in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium and Australia. Remastered in 2006, Living in the Material World is notable for the uncompromising spiritual content of its songs, as well as for what are generally considered to be the finest guitar performances of Harrisons career. Stephen Holden of Rolling Stone described the album as a pop classic. Most contemporary reviewers consider Living in the Material World to be a worthy successor to All Things Must Pass. Author Simon Leng refers to it as a forgotten blockbuster. ____________________________ 05 - George Harrison - Wonderwall Music [Full Album]. The songs are virtually all instrumental, except for some non-English vocals and a slowed-down spoken word track. The songs were recorded in December 1967 in England, and January 1968 in Bombay, India. Wonderwall Music is notable for being the first official solo album by one of The Beatles as well as Apple Records first LP release. The album is currently out of print. The recordings for the album were started in December 1967 in England. The rest was recorded in January 1968 in Bombay, India. Also recorded during the Indian sessions was the backing track to The Inner Light, which became the B-side to Lady Madonna, the final Beatles single on Parlophone Records. Some of the musicians credits are pseudonyms for Harrison, Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr. Harrison is listed merely as producer, arranger and writer for the album. Peter Tork of The Monkees also played banjo (specifically, one borrowed from Paul McCartney), but was not credited. Tork has stated that his brief recording features in the movie, but not on the soundtrack album. All of the tracks were composed by Harrison, and it was the first official solo album by a Beatle. It was the first album release on the newly formed Apple Records, appearing in November 1968, a few weeks before The Beatles (White Album). It would also be the first Apple record to be deleted, though it was remastered and reissued on CD in 1992. In the CD liner notes, Harrisons description of the recording done in England is revealing: I had a regular wind-up stopwatch and I watched the film to spot-in the music with the watch. I wrote the timings down in my book, then Id go to Abbey Road, make up a piece, record it. While the tracks recorded in England were made on multitrack recording machines and remixed, the Indian portions were recorded live to two-track stereo. Britpop band Oasis, well known for their love and imitation of The Beatles and their music, had a hit with a song called Wonderwall in the 1990s. The title may refer to the movie or to George Harrisons soundtrack album. ____________________________ 06 - George Harrison - Electronic Sound [Full Album]. Video Link: youtu.be/BnkJAmVLVhM George Harrison - Electronic Sound [Full Album] 01. 00:00 Under the Mersey Wall 02. 18:42 No Time Or Space Electronic Sound is George Harrisons first studio album and second album overall, following the release of the Wonderwall Music soundtrack. Released in May 1969, it was the second and final record released on the Beatles short-lived Zapple Records label, a subsidiary of Apple Records. The album features two lengthy pieces performed on the Moog synthesizer. It was one of the first albums to make exclusive use of the instrument. Zapple was intended as a creative outlet for avant-garde musical works. Not long after the release of this album The Zapple label was folded at the insistence of the Beatles then-manager Allen Klein. Because of its experimental and highly non-commercial nature, Electronic Sound failed to chart in the United Kingdom, and barely made the United States Billboard 200 album chart, peaking at number 191. Synthesist Bernie Krause later pursued legal action against Harrison, claiming that No Time Or Space (LP side two) was essentially a recording of him demonstrating the Moog III to Harrison (this is detailed in Krauses book Into a Wild Sanctuary). Krause also claimed that the demonstration was recorded without his knowledge or consent. Krauses name was originally credited on the front cover under Harrisons cover credit, but it was painted over at his insistence. Despite this, the words Assisted by Bernie Krause can still be read from under the silver ink on the original LP pressings. When the LP was first released in the US, the order of the recordings was accidentally switched, though the titles were not. When the album was issued on CD for the first time in late 1996, the correct original UK running order was used. Other editions, such as those from Japan, also use the UK running order. This error has caused many listeners to confuse the two titles. LP side one Under The Mersey Wall (18 minutes) uses the sound of two Moog instruments playing at the same time, an effect made possible through the use of overdubbing. LP side two No Time Or Space (25 minutes) begins with a series of gunshot-like sounds and appears to be a performance of a single Moog instrument, though often making use of tape delay and echo effects. Portions of white noise from this track are used throughout I Remember Jeep, one of several jams included on Harrisons third solo album, All Things Must Pass, released in 1970. The cover of Electronic Sound was painted by Harrison himself. The inside sleeve included minimal notes on the album and a quotation attributed to Arthur Wax: There are a lot of people around, making a lot of noise; heres some more. The words Produced by George Harrison appear on front cover of the original LP pressings printed in light blue ink, but were recolored in dark blue and red on later re-issues. The album is currently out of print. ____________________________ 07 - George Harrison - Cloud Nine (Remastered) [Full Album]. Including the hit single Got My Mind Set on You, Cloud Nine re-established Harrison as a critically acclaimed and commercially significant recording artist. It was to be Harrisons final solo studio album released during his lifetime. Brainwashed is the final studio album by George Harrison, released in 2002, almost a year after his death at age 58. Frustrated with the changing musical climate, George Harrison suspended his recording career in the early 1980s. He opted to pursue his other interests, such as film production with his own company, Handmade Films. The odd soundtrack or charity song would surface during this period, but otherwise it was a musically silent period for Harrison. By late 1986 — after a substantial break — Harrison felt the desire to make music again. He asked former Electric Light Orchestra leader and fellow musician Jeff Lynne to co-produce the album with him. After having written a round of new compositions (including the songs already contributed to the 1986 film Shanghai Surprise), Harrison entered his home studio, Friar Park, in Henley-on-Thames on 5 January 1987 to begin recording his first new commercial album in five years. Besides Harrison and Lynne, other artists involved in the recording sessions included Jim Keltner and Ringo Starr on drums, Eric Clapton on guitar, and on piano both Gary Wright and Elton John (who was recovering from his vocal surgery at the time). With new-found enthusiasm, Harrison actively promoted the album, even appearing with Starr at the Princes Trust Concert that June to perform While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Harrisons cover of Rudy Clarks obscure song Got My Mind Set on You quickly reached #1 in the United States and #2 in the United Kingdom. It was a surprising hit for the former Beatle, who had not enjoyed a mainstream #1 hit in nearly fifteen years. A few weeks later, Cloud Nine was released to very high anticipation, and it was promptly lauded by many critics as Harrisons best work since All Things Must Pass. The album went to #10 in the UK; it also achieved #8 and platinum status in the US. The success of the single Got My Mind Set on You and its accompanying video re-introduced George Harrison to the mainstream. The Beatles tribute song When We Was Fab also proved a successful follow-up single, reaching the Top 25 in both the UK and US. The next single, This Is Love, was a minor hit in the UK. While the success of Cloud Nine was not enough to spur Harrison into a tour, it inspired him to continue making music. In the spring of 1988, along with Lynne, he would call up friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison and begin recording a project ultimately released as the Traveling Wilburys. In 2004, Cloud Nine was remastered and reissued both separately and as part of the deluxe box set The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 on Dark Horse Records with new distribution by EMI, adding the bonus tracks Shanghai Surprise and Zig Zag (also released as When We Was Fabs B-Side) from the film Shanghai Surprise. The cover features Georges first American made guitar, a 1957 Gretsch 6128 Duo Jet that he purchased from a sailor for £75 in Liverpool in 1961. George called it his old black Gretsch. George gave the guitar to longtime friend, Klaus Voorman who kept it for twenty years. The guitar had been left in Los Angeles and had been modified. George had the guitar restored and used it for the cover shoot. ____________________________ 08 - George Harrison - Thirty Three & 1/ॐ (Remastered) [Full Album]. As his first release on his Dark Horse Records label, Thirty Three & 1/3 was beset with misfortune during its production, yet Harrison still managed to deliver one of his most celebrated albums. After satisfying his EMI contract with Extra Texture (Read All About It), Harrison signed immediately with Dark Horse, which was still under distribution with A&M Records. A part of their agreement was that Harrison was to deliver his new album by 25 June 1976. Unfortunately, Harrison was stricken with hepatitis and was only able to start recording the record in late May. Not wanting to rush his debut album on his own label, Harrison put off A&M, telling them the album would be ready when it was ready. But with Dark Horses other artists no longer doing so well, and Harrisons star on the wane, A&M decided they wanted to offload the label and promptly sued Harrison for late delivery of Thirty Three & 1/3 in September.[5] Within weeks, Harrison had moved both Dark Horse and himself over to Mo Ostin and Warner Bros. Records, who were more than pleased to have him, and Thirty Three & 1/3 and its lead-off single, This Song, the upbeat and sardonic send-up of the Hes So Fine vs. My Sweet Lord court case (which Harrison lost in 1976) were both released that November. Named for the fact that he was thirty-three and a third years old during its recording (as well as being the speed at which the vinyl album would be played), Thirty Three & 1/3 gave Harrison his strongest reviews since All Things Must Pass, including many positive and uplifting songs. It was clear that despite his legal woes, Harrison would not let his bad luck get him down. Unfortunately, the damage that previously-perceived mediocre albums had inflicted proved irreversible, and while Thirty Three & 1/3 actually outsold both Dark Horse and Extra Texture (Read All About It) in the United States, it reached a lower peak, cresting at #11 and going gold and selling about 800,000 copies. In the United Kingdom, it merely made it to #35. While the US single Crackerbox Palace made the Top 20 (and This Song #25), no UK singles saw any chart action. In actuality, Harrison could not care less about his record sales at this point in time. Already a private person, he began retreating more from the music industry as the 1970s drew to a close and immersing himself into films and leisure activities. Harrisons only major promotion for Thirty Three and 1/3 was an appearance with Paul Simon as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on 20 November 1976, and in some of the shows comedy sketches. The duo performed Here Comes the Sun and Homeward Bound together on the programme. (The live Harrison-Simon performance of Homeward Bound was later included on the 1990 various artists charity album, Nobodys Child: Romanian Angel Appeal and is also found on The Essential Paul Simon, Simons greatest hits record released in 2007 on the bonus DVD). The promotional videos for Crackerbox Palace and This Song, both directed by Eric Idle, debuted on the same episode. In 2004, Thirty Three & 1/3 was remastered and reissued both separately and as part of the deluxe box set The Dark Horse Years 1976--1992 on Dark Horse with new distribution by EMI, adding the bonus track Tears of the World, an outtake from the 1980 sessions for Somewhere in England. ____________________________ 09 - George Harrison Compilation.
