George Washington’s appearance in paintings shows the effect of his troublesome teeth. The image seen on the dollar bill shows a strange plumpness of his cheeks that was caused by the painter asking him to stuff his cheeks with cotton wool in order to fill out his protruding jaw. Earlier images of him show how much he had changed (a popular comparison is with the image on the 1932 quarter-dollar coin).
