George Weigel touches on an interesting point here. Germans considered themselves to be one of the most cultured and intelligent people on the planet. So why did they succumb to National Socialism? Weigel suggests that they viewed liberal democracy as decadent. One might argue that nihilism left a void that needed to be filled with a purpose. On the left was communism; on the right was fascism -- the inheritance of the French Revolutionaries. Time will tell whether alternatives to this artificial divide can be replaced with an alternative. American constitutionalism has done a remarkable job of resisting this siren song (to a point), but for how much longer?
