Getting the word out about this class that Prof. Harrington is offering. Its an opportunity to take the course or _help_develop_ it: New course: Introduction to Computing for Engineers and Scientists Spring 2015 Tuesdays and Thursdays 12-1:20 in BIO 221 This course will teach fundamental numerical computing skills to early-career students (typically Freshmen and Sophomores in the sciences or engineering) with no or limited computing background beyond ordinary web browser/spreadsheet/word processor use. Topics include basic programming in Python (including modern tools and techniques), computations involving numerical arrays and images, basic 2D and 3D graphics, managing research and class work online, and more. Most of all, it teaches how to learn new computer skills. Students who complete the course should be able to take most science classes requiring computer programming, such as AST 4762 Astronomical Data Analysis. The class is being developed in the Spring, with a pilot group of students taking it and a small group of Python-experienced helpers developing the exercises. If you are interested in either taking or helping with the course, contact Prof. Joe Harrington to register for 3 credits of Directed Independent Study.
